5Awesome horsepills
By D. K. Szwalkiewicz
First off, I think the reviews on this page are confusing. It seems to me there is a mix of people who bought the container of oil and those that bought the pills.

I bought the pills and am enjoying them very much. I read news reports on how coconut oil may help with Alzheimers, diabetes and diet so I thought I'd try them since I have issues with all of these in my family line. I feel more mentally focused and alert since I've started taking them a week or so ago. I definitely plan to continue to take the pills.

They are large as many people have noted (see my photo uploaded with the quarter), but they are not any bigger than any other large vitamin. The pills, like other vitamins, do have a slight smell if you stick your nose in the bottle. But they have no taste, no after taste and no gross burps later.

The bottle calls for 3 pills 3x a day. 9 seems pretty excessive for vitamins. I'm taking 6 right now, 3 with my coffee in the morning and 3 with dinner since I usually only have 1 or 2 meals a day.

I would note that taking these has loosened some things up, you know -- down there. It's not an emergency bathroom thing but you probably will be flowing pretty freely when you do go. I'm assuming my body will eventually adjust and become more regular but it's not really bother if it doesn't.

5Awesome Product...
By Kim C. M.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH COCONUT:
A few things first... I have done extensive research on Coconut oil & the benefits it has on our bodies. I can tell you that the antiviral benefits it has definitely works. After a couple of days of sleeping a ton, being very sick & calling me at work crying because she couldn't stay awake, I took my daughter (13 y.o. then 17 now) to the doctor & she was diagnosed with Mono. The doctor explained to me that it is part of the Epstein Barr family (cold sores, herpes, etc.) and that there isn't any kind of medicine that can "cure" the illness. He explained that she would sleep a lot, that I needed to call her school & tell them what she had & that she would only be there half days for a few months. I was deflated, stressed & couldn't believe there was nothing I could do for her. I had recently read a book that included coconut oil as a way to detox, lose weight, boost metabolism and so many others and had bought some oil to cook with & take daily. I had done a search & read as much as I could about the coconut & remembered reading that it killed the Epstein Barr virus. I went straight to my computer when I got home & did another search & found the article I had read. I decided to give my daughter the oil twice a day to see if it helped her. I called her down & melted the oil in a spoon & had her take it that afternoon & then again later that evening. The next morning before I left for work I gave her another dose. She called me around lunch time very happy and excited and said she wasn't tired and could stay awake. I remember thinking that the oil was working and was very relieved, but still a bit hesitant. When I got home to my surprise, she was very excited, wide awake & for the first time since she was sick, was chipper and I could tell she was getting back to her old self. I gave her another dose of the oil that evening & for a few days after and she was all better. The oil had killed the virus and restored her health.

This stuff is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone who has any illness, pain or arthritis type conditions. My old dog eats some oil, that I cook with, in his food for treatment of possible arthritis in his hip. He has stopped limping & can raise up from a laying/sitting position better than he has in a long time. It is also the first thing he eats in his bowl (I just take about a tablespoon and toss it on top of the dry food). HE LOVES IT!!

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT HERE:
I have been taking these pills for about 3 weeks now to help raise my metabolism & to help lower my cholesterol. I haven't been back to the doctor to see how it is working for my cholesterol, but I can say that it has boosted my energy levels more than any other oil or coconut product I have tried yet. The closest I've come to this level of energy boost was when I drank some homemade coconut milk from a coconut we bought from the store. Also, When I dropped my daughter off at work yesterday, she was exhausted (stayed up late texting or Twittering I would bet)& I handed her one of these pills & told her it would give her energy... As she walked away she stuck it right in her mouth & swallowed it!! When she came home that night I asked her if the pill worked & she said yes!! From a TEEN mind you!! This is the same child up top there that knows that this stuff works! I highly recommend this product if you are a coconut user and if you're not... What the H E double toothpicks are you waiting for???

2Off Taste
By DH
As the other reviewer mentioned, it does have more of a coconut smell than the other 2 I bought, but it has an off taste to it that the others do not. Reading about coconut oils, someone mentioned the gag factor. I had no idea what they were referring to until I tasted this. NOW's a good name, but they fell short here. You'd be better off with Jarrow or Nutiva, similar price, better taste...

5YUM! AMBROSIA!
By B. Cousins-coleman
After reading several of Bruce Fife's books (and they were wonderfully easy-to-read for the non-scientific type), I decided to give coconut oil a try to help with losing weight and getting my blood sugar under control. As a non-medication taking, recently diagnosed diabetic, I want to try whatever natural remedies I can find to stay off insulin and other diabetes meds, in addition to meds for cholesterol, etc. I tried taking a teaspoon or two with meals and a teaspoon btw meals and my blood sugar numbers were noticeably lower the same day. (Fife says the suggested dose is 3-4 tbs/day). The taste of this brand is fantastic, light and creamy with a delicious coconutty taste! I love coconut so I was able to eat it right from the jar, but I also tried it spread on a Wasa Crisp bread--WOW, what an easy way to get MCFAs into your diet! I will definitely be using this instead of any oils for all my cooking needs (except a little EVOO mixed together with this for salad dressing.) Also, I'm using on my skin and it feels really soft, plus you also get the internal benefits from using it on your skin! GREAT PRODUCT!

5Wow! The best smelling and tasting coconut oil yet!
By Lincoln
I'm very strict with my diet. I eat only organic foods, practice CRON (calorie restriction with optimal nutrition), eat minimal carbs and lots of nutrients. I've tested 4 other brands of organic coconut oil -- Nutiva, Spectrum Naturals, and 2 small scale raw food companies. This one is easily the best so far.

The aroma is wonderful and the texture is much fuller than the other brands. This coconut oil has fuller taste and less watered-down feeling than the other brands. So if you're looking for a good organic coconut oil, this is the one.

Now for some quick facts about how amazingly healthy this stuff is:

1) Medium chain fatty acids --> Digest very easily without requiring the gall bladder to do much. Great for people missing gallbladders and truly everyone.

2) Converts to usable energy very quickly. A much more balanced and less manic energy than any carbohydrate (fructose, lactose, glucose, etc)

3) Anti-viral, anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal. Keeps your digestive system very clean inside. Helps destroy candida and balance intestinal (probiotic) bacteria. Helps the immune system.

4) Longer lasting energy without insulin levels being adversely affected. Fats are the cleanest burning energy for our body. Carbohydrates cause insulin levels to raise and crash, which is what creates the "eat every 3 hours" cravings that so many people this is hunger. Healthy fats, like this oil, will not affect insulin and give us much more stable energy that last longer in the body.

5) Tastes great. Smells great.

6) Can be used topically to make the skin very soft. Is absorbed into the skin to nourish it, unlike most cosmetic moisturizers which leave residue or cause long-term dryness by unbalancing the body's innate skin oil balance.

7) Can be used as a sexual lubricant. Coconut oil is a natural anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial lubricant which helps keep these organs clean and reduce the spread of unwanted problem.

8) Great for hair and can be used as a leave-on conditioner. Like it's skin use, coconut oil will not imbalance the body's natural oils.... unlike chemical-based conditioners. Plus, because coconut is anti-"everything bad" it will keep the hair clean too!

9) Coconut oil detox cleanse. The medium-chain fatty acids make this and ideal food for detox cleanses because the energy is available with minimal digestive effort, plus all of it's anti-"everything bad" properties. The detox cleanse is a 3 to 7 day process where all carbohydrate foods are removed and coconut oil is eaten as the primary energy source (approx. 14 Tablespoons each day). The oil can be combined with organic lemon water as well. You can find the instructions by Googling "Natural News Coconut Oil Cleanse".

Basically, coconut oil is amazing! And this brand is the best I've found so far. Enjoy!

*** Update: I found a good website for coconut oil information and recipes. It has summaries of many studies on coconut oil. Visit coconutdiet (dotcom)

5Love love love this product!
By P. Sutter
I'm new to the coconut oil hype, but so far I can say the excitement is totally founded. I haven't tried it internally yet, but the external use has been amazing. I have keratosis pilaris (chicken skin) on my arms (upper and lower), legs, and butt (yay, me!). I've only ever found one cream by Lush that made any difference, and it was very expensive. Enter, coconut oil! First, you will notice that it comes as a solid (unless the temperature is above 72 degrees, then it melts, which is ok, don't panic). You take a bit and rub it between your hands and it melts instantly. You're going to think first: oh yuck, I'm not putting this on my body! But please do: rub it anywhere and everywhere. You'll notice how at firstit doesn't seem to be sinking in, but if you wait about ten minutes, it will do just that.

I should also mention I have a sensitive skin on my face, which despite proper exfoliating, sheds skin often. I get dry patches that, when at their worst, act like burns that open and are painful. I know, pretty gross. I'm usually cautious about trying new products on my face because it's so sensitive. For years I've been using Eucerin, but it's not always enough.

I through caution to the wind and slatered my face with the coconut oil. It felt pretty gross at first, but within ten minutes it started to sink it. I was nervous that I would wake up in the morning with oil-induced acne, but that didn't happen. What did happens was that it had sunk in completely and my face was the smoothest and softest I'd ever seen. Honestly, I couldn't stop touching my face! Of course this meant my makeup went on better, and I looked...I don't know...I guess the word is well-rested.

Another HUGE bonus is that while the dots on my arms still look like they're there, my keratosis pilaris is all but gone! My arms, legs, (and yes, butt) are the softest and smoothest I've ever seen them. I can't believe this worked! As you're working the oil into your skin, don't forget to rub it into your nails and eyelashes too. I swear my eyelashes look longer andI know my nails are definitely stronger.

Lastly, this product is CHEAP, you really can't go wrong with it. I have two tubs of it, one for my body and the other for my diet (the thought of using one for both grossed me out). I'll let you know how that goes.

Anyway, consider this a five-star, two thumbs way up review!

5Great for the hair, too!
By Kathryn Magendie
I wanted to try out this product for the "skin/hair care" side of it, though this product is "pure" enough that a little in my soup or skillet creates a nice nutty aroma and mild taste - really good in this coconut curry soup I eat.

That said, I brought the jar into my bathroom to keep it there instead of for cooking (I'll purchase another one for the kitchen). The one negative I have with this product for skin is that it's so thick and hard, I really have to dig in there to get a bit; however, once it's in the palm of my hand, the warmth of my skin melts it quite quickly. It can feel a little heavy and greasy at first, and the scent of coconut makes me think of cooking and not "beauty product;" but I mixed it with a little of my regular hand/body lotion and that was the ticket - it smoothed on my skin quite nicely and created a kind of "sheen" like those starlets have on their skin as they walk the red carpet with an insipid grin. Mixing it toned down the coconut scent, too.

I did smooth it on my face, straight, and it did absorb quickly, and the scent of coconuts wasn't so strong after a few minutes. I have slightly sensitive skin with a little rosacea and the product didn't break me out or irritate my skin.

But! The best "beauty" use I had from this product that SOLD me, is what it did to my hair! One morning I smoothed the coconut oil on my hair, paying particular attention to the ends. I threw my hair up in a ponytail and left the coconut oil in for at least an hour and a half. I rinsed it out with very warm water and then I shampooed twice. When I stepped out of the shower, I realized I was going to be late for an appointment. I quickly combed my hair, dressed, jumped into my car, and let the opened windows dry my hair, every so often shaking it out and combing through with my fingers -- I couldn't believe it! by time I reached my appt 35 minutes away, my hair was soft and smooth - even with the wind hitting it - no blow-dryer - no brushing it out - when I returned from the appt - again the windows open blowing my hair all over creation, I brushed my hair and it was so soft and shiny and smooth. That sold me -- if I don't use this product for anything else, it's worth it for how it made my hair look and feel!

5Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is not only organic, but non-GMO certified ...
By D. Fowler
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3PLVHG5U451IH I use organic coconut oil on a regular basis whenever I want to sautée
vegetables. I have on hand another brand of organic coconut oil, but was very surprised when I opened the Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and smelled it. Even though most of the claims of the coconut oil are quite similar (not quite) the aroma of this oil was stronger, much the way I remember it when I was a youngster.

Viva Labs has gone all out on their certifications and one I usually don't see is the non-GMO Project verification and certification. This is a real plus in my book and could possibly account in part for the aroma. The coconut oil originates in the Philippines as does most of the organic coconut oil I'm seeing on the shelves now. Mind you, some people have fits because it comes in plastic containers, but simply transfer to your container of choice upon arrival. For those who want to know, it is at least BPA free.

CERTIFICATIONS:

► CCOF Organic
► Non-GMO verified
► USDA Organic

FEATURES:

► Free of pesticides, bleach, hexane, and trans fats
► USDA certified organic and non-GMO
► Unrefined, extra-virgin, cold-pressed
► MCTs for energy and weight management
► Suitable for vegans
► Delicious tropical aroma and taste

NOTE: This oil "may contain trace amounts of tree nuts, sesame seed, and peanuts"

There are several used for coconut oil from dietary supplementation, cooking, skin, and hair care. The hair care suggestion was very interesting: "Use as a restorative, all-natural hair mask by massaging 1 tablespoon into dry hair. Let sit for 1 - 2 hours, shampooing thoroughly afterwards."

I'll probably give it a try at some point, but my preference was to sautée that zucchini, an overabundant crop this year. FYI, coconut oil adds a marvelous taste to veggies and they were awesome. I baked the zucchini to finish cooking. When it's warm, the coconut will liquefy. Not to worry because when it cools down in will solidify again. When it's liquid, I simply use a ladle to scoop some out. Coconut oil has a long shelf life and I've yet to have any go rancid on me.

Whatever you decide to use the Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for, I'm sure you'll love it. Remember to transfer it to a glass container if you're so inclined (it's simply not practical to ship in glass). I'm a real fan of coconut oil and the first time I used it, I definitely figured out what all the hype was about. There are a couple of things I really like about the Viva and they are the non-GMO certification and that more aromatic smell that its nearest competitor.

5Long-time Nutiva user is impressed
By Diane Kistner
I use a lot of extra virgin coconut oil, so much that I usually buy the Nutiva 2-pack of 54-ounce jars. I tried Vitacost's and didn't like it as much as Nutiva, so I've stuck with the Nutiva and really had not planned to switch brands. When I was offered the opportunity to review the Viva Labs product, I agreed but was doubtful I was going to be swayed.

Well, let me tell you, when I opened up this coconut oil, I was amazed at the difference. This is an extra virgin coconut oil I could actually imagine myself taking by the tablespoonful, as was recommended by several health books my sister shared with me for people suffering from candida albicans infections. I've used my Nutiva for popping popcorn, cooking, and for skin care, but now I'm thinking I'll just use up the Nutiva for frying and go straight for the Viva Labs version for everything else. There's just no contest.

A great use for this coconut oil is as a butter replacement on toast. My Nutiva spreads and melts like one of those margarines that take a long time to melt; the Viva Labs spreads like softened butter and melts like a dream.

Price-wise, I've been spending about 47 cents an ounce for the Nutiva when I buy it in the big bulk pack. I was thinking that, at almost 62 cents an ounce for the 15-ounce container, the Viva Labs was more expensive—although I'd have to say it's worth it. But when I went to cost out some of the other Nutiva products, they ran as much per ounce if not more than the Viva Labs product.

I'm impressed enough that I'll be switching.

5Best Tasting Coconut Oil I've Tried: Quality is A+
By Amazon Enthusiast
Nutiva's Organic coconut oil is the best I've found. I've tried several brands, but nothing tastes as clean and pure as this. There is a definite undertone of coconut, but I like the flavor, even when frying eggs or eating it on cinnamon raisin toast. I recently had bloodwork done and my HDL (the good cholesterol) was an impressive 77---anything over 39 is considered in range; over 50 is heart protective). I attribute this great HDL number to using only coconut oil, butter, and olive oil in my cooking & drinking green tea.

Amazon's Subscribe & Save offer is a great deal; I really like the 2 pack of these smaller (15 oz) jars. We're a small household and I like keeping one jar sealed while using the other. Keep in mind that coconut oil is different than other oils--it is solid at temperatures under 76, so it will look something like shortening in the wintertime. Still tastes great and is wonderful to use in all kinds of cooking.

One more important detail: this is an organic, COLD PRESSED coconut oil. Others may be organically grown, but I've found some brands are hydrogenated to make them solid at room temperature (I won't go into all the reasons this is not a "good thing"). Suffice it to say that any coconut oil you buy should be cold pressed (and that goes for your olive oil, as well). Google to find out why...

Happy eating!

UPDATE 3/19/13: Updated the temperature threshold for melting point: it's actually 76 degrees, according to the Nutiva label (not 72 degrees as I previously guesstimated).

UPDATE 1/17/14: Something fun: I like Cinnamon Toast (just coconut oil and cinnamon on top of a piece of raisin bread, broiled under the broiler. No sugar.). I've been eating it for YEARS & about a month ago, I asked myself why I was making such a mess by sprinkling the cinnamon ON TOP of the coconut oil. Call it a EUREKA Moment. I poured about 1/3 cup of ground cinnamon into a half-used 15 oz. tub of coconut oil and stirred well. Voila--CINNAMON COCONUT OIL (it looks exactly like nutella spread, BTW). It works fantastically well and makes and even more delicious (and neater) cinnamon toast than my other, more primitive method.

Hello, Nutiva--you need to market a cinnamon version of your delightful coconut oil! Till they do, try making your own; I think you're going to love it.

By D. S. Motor
The other day my significant other looked at me and remarked..."You have the skin of a teenager". It is the dramatic improvement in my skin since I've been using this product. First my dry hair's texture was changed within a few days and I no longer have dandruff since using this product. Then my skin from the neck down has this kind of sheen that I have not had in 40 years...the last time I was a teenager. Also the acne on the back or my arms, backside and back of my thighs is gone. I used to slather on a tea tree oil lip balm several times a day. Now I rub in coconut oil on my lips in the morning and maybe one other time during the day, on the days I do not wear lipstick.

The thing that has struck me most is my face. I had been through microdermabrasion, chemical peels and all sorts of exfoliating products that are now all replaced by coconut oil. I'm not usually one for dramatic reviews, but this product has performed VERY FAR BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS!!! Also by using this product I save a lot of money now that I no long have to use a ton of other products. I should note that I've been using this coconut oil for the last 4 or 5 months.

Update 11/2012
I thought my skin looked fabulous last year, but it has only gotten better. My large facial pores are significantly smaller and the acne breakouts that I used to have from time to time are history. My oily T-zone is history and yet it is hard for me to believe that an oil could render such dramatic results. I really thought that these resullts would have only been possible through some type of plastic surgery or at least interventions that would only be available through a plastic surgeon. I have historically had very oily skin and now each day I put coconut oil on my face. I used to put on a very tiny amount and if it seemed like too much, I quickly wiped off the excess. Now I put on more than I would have ever, ever considered just a few months ago and yet the results are even better.

5COMPARISON REVIEW to Nature's Way
By IsabellaAubreyAnna
When I learned about the many benefits and uses of coconut oil I had to try it, so I ordered 2 jars -one for my pantry for cooking/smoothies etc. and one for my bathroom to use as a body cream. Since I didn't know what brand to choose and didn't have any prior experience with coconut oil I decided to get one jar of the NUTIVA brand and one jar of the NATURE'S WAY brand.

Here's my initial opinion of both: With my Nutiva jar there's a sticker indicating the expiration date and package/creation date of the actual oil, whereas with my Nature's Way jar there's nothing like that. When I opened both of them up to try and to just generally check them out I tasted a tiny amount of both and it was very clear that the Nutiva jar's coconut oil tasted much better. I'm not sure exactly why, but to me the Nature's Way coconut oil didn't taste as good, it was kind of toasty in a bad way.

It was very easy for me to decide to use the Nutiva brand coconut oil for my cooking and in my smoothies and the Nature's Way coconut oil for my skin. I've since read that this difference in taste could be because the Nutiva brand coconut oil was fresher and the Nature's Way older. Or it could be quality, I'm really not sure. But I am sure that from now on I'm going to just be buying the Nutiva brand Coconut Oil (just ordered 2 more big jars of it). :)

To say that the Nature's Way coconut oil was toasty still isn't exactly the right word -toasty sounds like something good... when it's so not, but I really can't think of a better word to describe the difference.

I've found a lot of uses for coconut oil and have used it for many things with great results so far. It's hard to believe one little oil can do so much! Weird actually, but everything I've tried it with so far has had positive results.

So here's a list of weird, random, but completely amazing things I've found coconut oil to do:

-Works better than any make-up remover: seriously, just use a nickle size amount or less on your eyes to get all eye make-up off in a flash.

-Helps clear up acne: One night after using it to take off my eye make-up I decided to use it as an all over face make-up remover... then decided my face felt so good I didn't want to use anything else (hint: leave the coconut oil on your face for a minute and then get your water and washcloth really really hot to wipe it all away). I googled to see if this was okay to do and it turns out coconut oil can help get rid of acne! You can use it as a facewash. Strange but true. BUT I also found out that Castor Oil works even better for this (and like coconut oil still moisturizes your face and keeps it from drying out), so I've ordered a small bottle of that to use instead in the future... but still, coconut oil has worked really well for me and apparently others. When you have skin like mine (I'm 25) that occassionally breaks out but still is a little dry sometimes it's hard finding the right balance and exactly the right thing to use -I feel like now I've figured out some great secret to getting it right.

-You can use it as a deoderant: This one I read online and decided to try on a day where I wasn't really doing anything or working out. It felt weird -like I was putting some kind of lotion or body creme under my arms instead of my normal Secret deoderant. But guess what? It worked! I have since been trying it on days where I actually do work out and it STILL is working. Craziness! It keeps me dry and smelling good the same as my old deoderant did. AND there's no aluminum zirconium (have no idea how to spell that correctly) which I know is now supposedly bad for you (most deoderants still use it though) because it's connected/correlated with Alzheimers. So... an all natural, organic, one ingredient deoderant that feels like a body creme -doesn't get much better than that! Plus my underarms are looking softer/nicer. :)

-You can use it on your scalp and hair: Now I've tried this several times and although I DO like the way it moisturizes my hair, I don't like the way my hair looks after I wash it out... it's just kind of lanky/heavy. Not in an extreme way or anything, but I like my hair to have lots of body. So while I do recommend coconut oil to help heal frazzled hair and stimulate hair growth I don't recommend doing it right before any big event in your life... maybe like a few days before so you get the benefit of the moisturized, healthy hair, without any worries about styling it. This is another one where I've looked it up and found that Castor Oil when massaged in the scalp can stimulate hair growth/fast hair growth even better -so now that I've got that bottle on the way to me from amazon I'll probably be using that instead, at least on my scalp.

-You can use it as a body creme and even a BODY WASH. Yepp. A body WASH. Sounds crazy, but it makes my skin look SO good. Better than it's ever looked actually. Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties (and of course is moisturizing) and will clean your skin while hydrating it. So no harsh chemicals or detergents touch your skin -and if you have sensitive skin like I do, well this stuff might just be your new best friend, must-have, can't live without it ever, stuff! I used to have a minor skin problem on my arms that I absolutely hated. Just general redness, sensitivity, and tiny little red dots on the tops of my arms (that I've had since childhood). Now I absolutely don't -and it's literally all because of coconut oil. Maybe it's because I'm not putting soaps/bodywash on my skin anymore or maybe it's because coconut oil is really that awesome, but it has basically cured my arms and has made the skin all over my body look amazing! I seriously can't believe how good it makes my skin look! The best thing to do is to literally use it like a body wash all over -rinse off and then either just towel dry and go or towel dry and then reapply again if your skin is dry or it's winter or you live in a dry climate. When you reapply you're going to have to have some kind of small towel to wipe off excess with before you put on clothes. Either way it makes your skin look great. :) You can also use it to shave with apparently but I haven't tried that. I'm using it to make my own homemade body scrubs and of course using it as a body creme and loving it!

-You can feed it to your dogs (one tablespoon a day) to make their coats shiny. (I've been giving it to both my dogs, although not every single day and they love it.

-It can help you lose weight. Apparently it has a lot of really GOOD for you fats that your body doesn't treat like other fats and it actually helps you lose weight (learned this from Dr. Oz). Plus it tastes good when you cook with it and put it in smoothies. Actually I LOVE it in smoothies, it just adds an extra tropical coconut flavor. :-)

-You can use it for Oil Pulling.

-You can use it as a lip balm.

Plus I know there's so much more but that's all I can think of right now! Basically it's really good stuff that I am now believing everyone should have in their home! :-)

4Fresh, flavorful, and hexane-free
By Observant I
I've tried a few different brands of extra-virgin coconut oil, and for the most part I'm equally satisfied with them all. Despite the marketing hype, coconut oil brands within each category (virgin, refined, hydrogenated) are very similar. I should specify the qualities I look for in a coconut oil: I want a coconut oil with a rich coconut aroma and taste, maximum nutrition, and minimal processing. For these reasons, I always select an organic, extra-virgin, cold-pressed oil.

I'm pleased that this Nutiva Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil provides these qualities along with an easy-to-find "packed on" and "best before" date. The jars I ordered in late January 2011 were packed on September 13, 2010, and the "best before" date is September 13, 2012. Stored correctly (cool, dark location, no refrigeration needed), this nutrient-dense oil stays fresh for two years. It smells and tastes great--coconutty and slightly sweet.

According to Nutiva, no hexane is used in the processing of this oil. Hexane is a petroleum-derived solvent used in all kinds of industrial applications, from shoe manufacturing to roofing. Interestingly, because hexane's primary molecular structure is carbon, it can be passed off as "organic." Do a little research; "cold-pressed," "organic," AND "hexane-free" are key considerations when selecting your coconut oil for nutrition purposes.

I'm not as pleased with the plastic jars. In fact, I took off a star as a result of the plastic packaging. I feel that a quality organic oil should be stored in a glass jar, and ideally a dark one to reduce oxidation. I've actually selected coconut oils specifically because they come in glass jars, and might have bypassed this product if I hadn't found it on sale at a good price. I put this information in the review to aid those of you who are looking for a coconut oil in a glass jar. Of course, at this larger size, you might prefer a plastic jar to eliminate some of the weight, but for storage purposes, glass might be best.

5Superb oil for health
By H. A. Kaplan
I've tried others, but Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is by far the tastiest and easiest to eat. I absolutely love it. I just eat it right out of the jar, several tablespoonfuls a day, for the health and weight loss benefits. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I've read through the reviews and just wanted to clarify some things with actual facts for those who are interested. Saturated fat, such as coconut oil, butter, lard, tallow, etc., is not only NOT harmful, but it is ESSENTIAL for good health and need not and should not be limited in quantity as the government suggests. It does NOT clog arteries--that is a lie that has been propagated for the last 60 years and thankfully there are finally practitioners with the courage and common sense to speak the truth. I am a dentist, intimately involved in nutrition, and I know what I'm talking about.

The majority of coconut oil is medium chain triglycerides which are broken down quickly by the liver for energy. It raises metabolic rate, thus promoting weight loss, and it does work. But you should know that butter is healthy, too, and has some important long chain fatty acids, and it, too, will promote weight loss. Heavy cream is essentially butter before it's been churned. So certainly eat coconut oil--it has myriad health benefits--but eat all your saturated fats, including plenty of fatty, red meat.

Coconut oil will not oxidize and go rancid. You can leave it on the counter probably for years. So don't worry about buying too much. And for the same reason, a dark jar is not necessary. Please know that liquid seed and nut oils, and even fish oil, will go rancid, because of the high unsaturated content. These oils oxidize quickly and form free radicals. They are a major contributing factor in virtually all the prevalent diseases and disorders from which people suffer.

And finally to those complaining of the plastic jar, most of us, especially those who use a lot of coconut oil, would just as soon accept the "horrifying" risks of plastic jars rather than paying a fortune for shipping glass jars. We don't all have extra bags of cash lying around.

Most of the reviews here seem to focus on the taste, versatility, and health benefits of this oil in cooking, but coconut oil does so much more than just taste great! With the 108 ounces of coconut-y goodness in this product, you'll have plenty to use all over the home.
Use it as:

* massage oil, especially if you have poor circulation.

* a natural Preparation H substitute!

* diaper ointment, safe for cloth diapers, too!

* insect repellant.

* makeup remover.

5great and afforadable skin moisturizer among other things
By Cameron Ferrell
I initially started using coconut oil as a skin moisturizer. My roommate swears by it and she has perfect toned skin. My face use to be very blotchy and uneven. This oil really evened things and cleared up. Coconut oil has seriously improved the look (and feel!) of my skin and for that I'm really happy. I'll also add it to my smoothies sometimes, a lot more as of lately, and it really gives me energy I otherwise wouldn't have. We also use almond oil too -NOW Foods Sweet Almond Oil - 16 oz. + FREE 100% Cococare Coconut Oil - 4 fl oz. The almond oil might even be a better moisturizer for the skin but I love the smell of the coconut oil too so I am kind of indifferent there. Both are easy on the skin, and can be used for a variety of other uses as well. I've also been making my own moisturizer lately and if you mix just these oils in with a unscented lotion, your skin will look brighter and healthier within hours. Pretty awesome!

The medium chain fatty acids make this and ideal food for detox cleanses because the energy is available with minimal digestive effort, plus all of it's anti-"everything bad" properties.

5Great stuff !!
By Girl-84
I have been Using this brand for about a year now. One of my coworker introduce me to it. I did a little research & found lots of ways to use this oil. 1: I use this for my oil pulling routin in the morning ( for those of you who is not familiar with oil pulling, you can check it out on YouTube. Oil pulling is something you do in the morning before you brush your teeth. It's suppose to remove all the toxic from your body. I was a little skeptical at first, but I've been doing this faithfully for a year now , it's gives me lots of energy & it also help whiten my teeth too. First thing you do is take about a little less then half of spoon & swish it in your mouth between your teeth. Try not to swallow it. Don't swish like how you would with mouth wash . 2: I use it on my skin as a moisturizer . I know it sounds crazy, but hey it made my skin super soft. It can be a little greasy for the first 30 mins or so, but it works great! Some of you may think this is silly but, I just like to share what I think works for me and it may Work for others too. Thank you for reading:-)

Coconut Oil, 32 ozOrganic & Extra VirginCoconut oil is a natural energy source because it contains MCTs (medium chain) “good fats” the body uses to produce energy. As a dietary supplement, Coconut oil is a good addition to physical activity, exercise and weight loss programs. Our Coconut oil is certified Organic, Non-GMO, Pure extra virgin, has Zero trans fat and Zero hydrogenated fat. Coconut oil can be taken as a dietary supplement, used for cooking or used for skin & hair care.DosageAs a dietary supplement, take 1 to 4 tablespoons daily. May be used as a spread or added to salad dressings & smoothies. The item is a semi-solid product. If the product has been kept/stored in an area or facility that would put the product in higher than “typical room temperatures”, the product will start to transform into a liquid form. This is a typical trait of all semi-solid products, not just inclusive of this particular product. As the product would come to room temperature, it will again become solidified. This process, in becoming solidified may take a few hours, dependent upon the environment the product has been exposed to. The “solids” at the bottom of the jar when stirred the product, would be particles that had not turned to liquid form. Again, the “watery” state indicates was due to the temperature the product had been exposed to. The product has various uses – many in which the product can be utilized in liquid form and semi-solid. Thus depending upon what the consumer desires of the product, having the product in semi-solid form, creates this ability to transform to the needed use for the consumer.

5Hard to find Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
By M. Barker
Some people use this as a cooking oil for high temps and also for eating raw. Well, I use it in massage therapy. This is a phenominal product and because it is cold pressed still has the scent of coconut. The aroma is not overwhelming and does not linger on the skin. Because this oil is solid at less than 76 degrees you have to warm it to liquify. To keep from becoming rancid, once open it should be kept in the refrigerator. It contains no preservatives. It will absolutely stain your linens as it is very thick. To remove spray PAM or other brand aerosol anti stick cooking spray on the stain. It will then launder right out. Just know that a soapy wash will not remove this. As a skin treatment Jarrow and Garden of Life are the premier coconut oil perveyors. A+. 2-3 oz is enough for one massage. I use a scale to weigh out for each client, which everyone should do to avoid cross contamination. Try.

5Best tasting and consistently great
By J. John
I have tried other coconut oils. They can taste funny. The Jarrow Extra Virgin tastes great, like a delicious light coconut flavor that adds a great boost to stir-fry, meats, even scrambled eggs taste terrific. The Jarrow regular coconut oil (not extra-virgin) is also nice but has no taste. I like this one best and will continue to buy it. Yum yum! Also makes a fun candy coating for bananas when mixed with unsweetened cocoa powder and a little cinnamon. Dip banana slices in the mixture and refrigerate until solid. Enjoy!

4Pretty good compared to Nutiva
By TW
We've used the Nutiva organic extra virgin coconut oil for some time, and thought it would be good to try this coconut oil from Jarrow and compare.

We've been really happy with the Nutiva and wondered how much a difference (if any) we could tell from a different organic extra virgin coconut oil.

- Taste -

The first thing we noticed with the Jarrow (this coconut oil) is that it tasted for lack of a better word...more "coconutty." It's not a bad thing, in fact the taste is quite pleasant.

- Smell -

Definitely smells more coconutty than the Nutiva. It's not strong or overbearing. It smells pretty good, but this will depend on your olfactory preferences.

- Texture -

The Nutiva seems to be a little more smooth and the Jarrow a little more flakey when trying to spread or get it out of the container (in solid state).

The Jarrow labeling states for best results to refrigerate after opening. Well...that makes it quite hard to scoop out.

- Appearance -

The Nutiva has a noticeable yellow hue to it. The Jarrow is pure white. Side by side, you can really see the difference.

- Process -

Both products state Organic, extra virgin, and unrefined. However, the Jarrow says it is expeller pressed while the Nutiva is cold pressed?

Which is better? Cold or expeller pressed? After researching a bit, it looks like unfortunately, the term "cold pressed" can be used even when the process is not really cold pressed. So it's important to look up a company's process on their website. Nutiva seems good, but it's hard to always be sure. Livestrong states that expeller pressed gets out more oil but may diminish the taste and aroma; however, we found that the Jarrow which is expeller pressed to have more flavor and aroma than the Nutiva which states it is Cold Pressed.

So, the Jarrow wins for taste and smell. Nutiva wins for texture and perhaps a better process in the cold-pressed processing.

5Good for soapmaking
By Jessica L Matlosz
This coconut oil is perfect for soapmaking. Anyone who has used coconut oil should know that it remains in a solid form if the temperature is under 76 degrees so I am not sure why that would be a negative. I am also not concerned about the bottle; it is perfectly sufficient. I have also bought food grade lye from essential depot and the bottle does not have a problem holding that in so I'm not worried about the coconut oil leaking. Overall it is a great product and fairly cheap for a large quantity of coconut oil.

5Great for skin and hair
By Tamori
Great for skin and hair but I wouldn't eat this quality of coconut oil. It smells very fresh. It makes my skin very soft. I use another brand that comes in a glass jar for cooking and for eating. I like that the seller says specifically that this type of coconut oil is best for making soaps. So that shows me that they are honest and they know that you wouldn't want to eat this type of coconut oil. I will definitely keep buying this oil for my skin and hair. I have purchased other oils such as Avocado Oil and Vegetable Glycerine from this buyer and I love the quality! Shipping is quick and no leakage of the product! I saw that they sell some other oils that I am interested in so I will be purchasing those items.

  • Finest Quality Coconut Oil for Soapmaking
  • Quality Safety Sealed HDPE Resealable Container
  • 76 Degrees F Melting Point

Product Description

Finest Quality Coconut Oil - 76 F - 1 Quart shipped in High Quality HDPE Quart Safety Sealed Container.Coconut Oil - Cocos nucifera - Coconut oil is obtained from copra, the dried "meat" of coconut. Distillers separate the copra from the hull of the coconut. It is dried, crushed, and then expressed to remove the oil. This coconut becomes liquid at 76 degrees. When cold it becomes solid or semi-solid. Some people might call coconut oil, coconut butter. Both are the same thing. This oil has a thick texture with no taste and no odor.A percentage of coconut oil in cosmetics is moisturizing; too much of it can be drying. Its saturated nature resists rancidity and makes a very hard soap, while at the same time producing a fluffy lather.Soapmakers usually combine coconut oil with olive, palm, palm kernel or castor oils for an all-vegetable soap. Some soapmakers use between 20% and 30% of a soap batch as coconut oil.

5What's inside the jar?
By Celadon
The price point of this product makes it immediately attractive. It's only detractor, the labeling, fails to mention the various qualities that a health concious consumer needs to know when comparing the more expensive alternatives. After some research, a manager at the Trader Joe's-Bollinger helped unravel this dilemma by providing the following information. Trader Joe's Coconut Oil is: non-hydrogenated, cold pressed--no heat is used at any time during the processing, raw filtered, unpasturized, and is strained. Hope this helps!

5Love the product, but Amazon is selling for too much!
By Andrea
I love, love, love this coconut oil! It has a great flavor and I use it for almost everything! I even made a deodorant out of it (2 tbsp each of: coconut oil, baking soda, cornstarch, and shea butter (optional, I do not add the shea butter) It really works!). Now, I have only purchased this in store so when I saw that Amazon was selling it for almost $18 a jar I was VERY disappointed!!! In store it is only $5.99!!! So buyer beware, it is an awesome product, but the price on here is ridiculous. Enjoy!

5Amazing!
By C. Irish
I happened to pick a jar of this up at Trader Joe's and when I went to the check out to buy it, one of the ladies began to tell me some of the many benefits of coconut oil. I bought it to try on my dry skin. What I didn't know was that it has many benefits. She told me her mother in-law suffers from Alzheimer's and she takes it and it helps her memory. She also told me it's good in coffee, on toast, scrambled eggs and can be used instead of normal cooking oil.

When I put it on my face, the very next day, amazingly, the pores on my nose were smaller and almost invisible and I have large pores on my nose! I don't know how it did that, but it did. It also helped on my dry skin areas. I put in on my hair and just rubbed it in and left it and the next day when I took a shower, my hair was very soft.

There are many uses for coconut oil and using it on your skin is only one of the things. The average daily recommendation is three tablespoons, but you should work your way up to that and not start with three because your body won't be used to it. Coconut oil helps aid good cholestrol and can help with memory loss and it has a lot of other amazing properties. Using this simple, inexpensive oil can really help with a lot of common problems and it tastes and smells really good.
